Prince William and Princess Kate Surprise Kevin Sinfield in Moving Tribute to Rob Burrow’s MND Legacy

The Prince and Princess of Wales made an unannounced, deeply heartfelt joint appearance in northern England, championing the fight against motor neurone disease (MND) and celebrating the extraordinary camaraderie of rugby league icons Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield.

The royal couple first arrived at Headingley Rugby Stadium, home to the Leeds Rhinos, to reflect upon the enduring impact of Burrow’s legacy. The former rugby star passed away in June 2024 at age 41, having inspired the nation through an extraordinary awareness campaign launched following his 2019 diagnosis.

Later in the day, Kate—who serves as patron of the Rugby Football League—and William orchestrated the ultimate surprise for Kevin Sinfield, traveling to DIY Kitchens Stadium in Wakefield. After meeting families living with MND, the royals welcomed Sinfield onto the pitch to commend him on his grueling “7 in 7: The Grand Finale” marathon challenge. The feat sees Sinfield running at least 45 kilometers daily for seven consecutive days across 12 Betfred Super League stadiums before crossing the finish line at Old Trafford. Sinfield’s relentless efforts have raised over £10 million for MND causes since 2020.

The moving reunion deepens William’s longtime personal bond with the Burrow family and Sinfield, having personally invested both athletes with CBEs in 2024 and officially opened the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in November 2025 alongside Rob’s widow, Lindsey Burrow.
The engagement capped a prolific period of public duties and private patronages for the Waleses, coming hot on the heels of official Windsor Castle meetings regarding The Royal Foundation and the Duchy of Cornwall.
