The final hours of Queen Elizabeth II’s life have once again been thrust into the spotlight after a bombshell claim about Meghan Markle’s journey to Balmoral resurfaced.
According to author Tom Bower’s book Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family, King Charles allegedly stepped in after learning that Meghan intended to accompany Prince Harry to Scotland on September 8, 2022.
The dramatic claim suggests Charles considered Meghan’s presence at Balmoral “unacceptable” as the Royal Family gathered around the Queen during her final hours.
Harry and Meghan were staying at Frogmore Cottage when news broke that the monarch’s condition had seriously deteriorated. Harry was subsequently expected to travel north after being contacted by his father.

But according to Bower’s account, plans became complicated when Charles reportedly discovered that Meghan intended to join Harry.
The author claims Charles personally contacted his son and objected to the plan, citing the difficult relationship between Meghan and the Royal Family.
Bower further alleged that Charles believed his late mother had been deeply hurt by Harry and Meghan’s decisions following their departure from royal duties.
The situation reportedly became even more tense as Harry attempted to make his way to Balmoral.

William was also travelling to Scotland, while Catherine, then the Duchess of Cambridge, remained in Windsor. According to the account, Charles emphasized that Catherine was not travelling either, apparently attempting to make clear that Meghan was not being singled out.
Harry ultimately travelled to Balmoral alone.
But the circumstances surrounding Meghan’s absence have remained a source of intense fascination among royal watchers ever since that tragic day.
What makes the story particularly controversial is that other accounts have portrayed Meghan’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth very differently.
Meghan publicly praised the monarch during her 2017 engagement interview, calling her an “incredible woman,” while the Queen’s corgis were famously said to have taken a liking to Meghan.
The pair also appeared warm and relaxed during their first solo royal engagement together in Cheshire in 2018, where they were photographed laughing and sharing a carriage.
That has left the circumstances surrounding September 8, 2022 open to competing interpretations.
Bower’s version paints a picture of deep family tensions unfolding behind the scenes on one of the most consequential days in modern royal history — but the claims are those of the author and have not been independently established.
