4They overcame high altitude, a hostile Mexican crowd and played 40 minutes of the game with 10 men to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
But Rooney had a pained expression on his face when footage of the party – which included John Stones hilariously fooling Thomas Tuchel with a fake shoulder injury – was played after the BBC‘s coverage of Portugal vs Spain.
England‘s former record goalscorer said: “I’m a bit more old school. After you win anything… I know you’ve got to enjoy it but I think it’s a bit too soon.”
Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta, who was in good spirits after watching Spain notch a stoppage-time win over their neighbours, disagreed.
He said: “As a player, when you have had these kinds of games against a host, this atmosphere, you have to enjoy it.
“Life is about balance, football is about balance, you have to enjoy it.
“Now they will recover and be ready for another game.”
There was a massive release of tension when the final whistle confirmed England’s historic Azteca victory in the early hours of Monday morning (UK time).
