An ally of Meghan Markle has described Brits as the “most evil people in history”. Talking about her career, the actor and comedian, Jameela Jamil, told the Yestergays podcast about how she came to star in comedy series The Good Place alongside Ted Danson.

Reflecting on her character Tahani Al-Jamil in the show, Jamil said the writers wanted her to be sweet because that is how Americans see Brits. Jamil said that was “crazy”, adding: “British people are truly the most evil people in history. They are Thanos (the Marvel supervillain).”

She continued: “They owe 43 trillion to India… We colonized the world so the idea she would be this sweet, saccharine woman…”

Jamil explained how she and the Netflix show’s creator, Michael Schur, “butted heads” over how to play her, with the actor wanting to portray her in a passive aggressive way while he wanted more innocent and likeable.

The actor told Yestergays: “British people, especially rich British people, aren’t likeable to anyone. They’re horrible. They’re awful.”

She explained how the solution was to do two different versions of the character and the best would be selected for the final edit.

Jamil, 45, has been a vocal ally of the Duchess of Sussex, with both having been under intense media scrutiny.

Meghan and Jamil are believed to have formed a bond over the actor’s body-positive “I Weigh” movement before the Duchess invited her to feature on the cover of British Vogue in 2019.

After Meghan came under fire for talking about politics, Jamil defended her, accusing trolls of targeting her because she is mixed race.

She wrote: “And because she’s smart, strong, opinionated, rebellious, beautiful, happy and has everything they never will.”

Jamil later featured in Meghan’s Archetypes podcast where she told her: “It’s an unfathomable amount of s*** that you take, Meghan. I can’t believe it.”

The US based actor told Meghan she fought back on her behalf for years before they met because she felt outraged at how a “very kind, civilised woman” was being portrayed.
