He was seen rubbing his eyes and face during an emotional trudge around the field.

Bellingham and other England stars walked slowly across the pitch to applaud their fans.

And the Real Madrid man was left to cry in Atlanta as Argentina players celebrated around him.

After scoring six times across the tournament, Bellingham found it hard to impact this game.

He was seen consoling Nico O’Reilly in the centre circle, picking up the Manchester City ace.

Bellingham then leapt to the defence of Morgan Rogers, who was involved in a scrap at the end of the clash.

He got into a shoving match with several of the Argentina players as tempers boiled over.

Cameras then caught the moment he slapped former Brighton midfielder Valentin Barco over the back of the head.

It was yet more semi-final heartbreak
Things had threatened to go that way from early on with tackles flying in.

And it seemed that England had controlled their emotions better when Anthony Gordon tapped in to make it 1-0 in the second half.

He converted Rogers’ cross at the back post but from then on England went into their shells.

Controversial Thomas Tuchel subs saw the team sit back – and they were ruthlessly punished.

Enzo Fernandez fired in from range after a short corner caught England out.

And then Lautaro Martinez nodded in a winner in stoppage time.

It means it is a second semi-final defeat for England at World Cups in three attempts – despite going ahead again.

Bellingham did not play in the first of those – against Croatia at Russia 2018 – but he was involved in the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.
