For years, Tipping Point viewers have been convinced there is more to the ITV game show’s famous machine than meets the eye.
From counters suddenly sliding in unexpected directions to theories about hidden magnets, fans have repeatedly questioned whether the giant machine is really as straightforward as it appears.

But host Ben Shephard has previously lifted the lid on what actually goes on behind the scenes — and revealed that the seemingly simple game relies on a surprisingly complicated system.
The ITV favourite recently celebrated a decade on television, during which countless contestants have battled their way through the machine in the hope of walking away with the show’s £10,000 jackpot.

Contestants answer questions, and every correct answer gives them the chance to drop a counter into the machine. As the counter moves through the mechanism, it can push other counters forward and send them crashing over the edge.
Every ordinary counter that falls is worth £50.
There is also the chance of landing a double counter, which can instantly increase a contestant’s winnings.

Eventually, only one player remains and gets the opportunity to play for the coveted jackpot counter, worth £10,000. If that counter lands alongside a double, the potential prize can become even bigger.
But while the game looks relatively simple on screen, Ben has revealed that an intricate operation is taking place just out of sight.
In a 2019 interview, the presenter explained that the machine is controlled by what he described as a “really complicated system” operated by the production gallery.

And there is also a member of the crew sitting behind the machine whose job is crucial to keeping everything running smoothly.
Ben explained that the crew member monitors the hydraulics to ensure they are moving at the correct speed, because they can sometimes operate too quickly.
They also make sure the hoppers feeding the counters remain full throughout filming.
A ladder behind the machine allows production staff to climb up and replenish the counters whenever necessary.
At the beginning of a game, 40 counters are placed into the machine rather than simply being poured in, with their starting positions arranged without any particular order.
Once the counters begin falling, another member of the production team keeps track of exactly how many have dropped so Ben can tell contestants how much money they have won.
Those counters are then cleared away before the next stage of filming.
Even the counters themselves receive special treatment.
According to Ben, they are individually polished before each episode so that there are no visible marks that could distract from the action when they appear on camera.
Despite the behind-the-scenes explanation, however, some viewers remain convinced that there is something else influencing the machine.
Over the years, fans have developed some extraordinary theories about why certain counters appear to move in seemingly impossible directions.
One particularly popular theory suggested that a hidden magnet could be positioned underneath the metal playing surface and pulling counters toward one side.
The speculation intensified after viewers spotted counters apparently moving sharply to the left during one episode.
One fan posted online that the movement was “definitely a magnet underneath,” insisting that the counter’s trajectory appeared impossible without some kind of outside force.
Others quickly joined the debate.
Some viewers pointed to what they believed were other strange movements from the counters over the years, while others suggested the entire machine might be slightly tilted.
Another fan admitted they had long suspected there could be a magnet beneath the metal surface because, in their view, some of the counters simply could not have moved in the way they did naturally.
For others, the unusual movements were enough to make the whole thing seem suspicious.
But Ben’s explanation makes clear that there is a considerable amount of technology, hydraulics and production work involved in making the famous Tipping Point machine operate as viewers see it on screen.
So while fans may continue to debate magnets, secret mechanisms and mysterious movements, the reality behind ITV’s giant machine is already far more complicated than it looks.
And perhaps that is exactly what makes Tipping Point so addictive to watch.
