Tipping Point Contestant Loses £10,000 After Turning Down Ben Shephard’s Final Offer

A Tipping Point contestant was left facing a painful “what if?” moment after turning down Ben Shephard’s final offer — only to discover that he would have won the £10,000 jackpot had he accepted it.

Stephen had battled his way through the episode and reached the final stage with £3,300 in his bank.

With no more questions to answer, Ben gave him one last decision: keep the money he had already won or risk it all for three additional counters that could potentially knock the jackpot counter into the win zone.

Stephen ultimately chose to play it safe.

And the decision proved agonising.

Stephen Turns Down the Trade

Ben explained that Stephen could either walk away with his £3,300 or trade the money for three final counters.

“If you decide to take the trade, nothing else has value, so you leave with £10,000 or nothing at all,” Ben explained.

The presenter then asked: “What do you reckon — three counters, will it be enough?”

Stephen admitted he was tempted.

“It’s funny, I’m almost tempted to play along and see and go for the extra three counters to see the look of horror on my wife’s face at home!” he joked.

But after thinking it over, Stephen decided the risk was simply too great.

“To be honest, I think I would be pushing my luck,” he said, explaining that things had not really gone his way throughout the game.

“So I’m going to stick with what I’ve got, the £3,300.”

Ben gave him one final opportunity to change his mind.

“Would you like to take the money or the trade?” he asked.

“I’ll take the money!” Stephen replied.

‘Do I Have To?’

Although Stephen had made his decision, Ben revealed that they would still play out the three-counter trade to see what might have happened.

“However, strange things happen with this peculiar contraption of ours. So we’re going to play out the trade and see what might’ve happened,” Ben said.

Stephen wasn’t exactly thrilled about finding out.

“Do I have to?” he asked.

“Yes you do!” Ben replied.

The first counter moved the jackpot counter closer to the win zone.

The second sailed past it.

Then came the third and final drop.

“£10,000! Is it going to go? Oh Stephen!” Ben exclaimed.

Stephen couldn’t bear to watch.

“I’m closing my eyes, I’m not looking,” he admitted.

Then the jackpot counter began to tip.

“Stephen, Stephen, Stephen! No,” Ben cried as the counter finally fell over the edge.

The jackpot had gone.

Ben Apologises After the Painful Reveal

The result left both Stephen and Ben visibly frustrated.

“I’m sorry Stephen because that roll was fantastic in terms of answering questions, but we just hit the buffers,” Ben said earlier in the game.

After watching the simulated trade play out, the presenter acknowledged just how painful the moment had been.

“It’s one of the most painful things to watch — but like you say, £3,300 is a lovely amount of money,” Ben told him.

Stephen, for his part, tried to focus on the positive.

“I’ve got £3,300, I’m pleased,” he said.

But Ben couldn’t resist pointing out just how close Stephen had come to making the opposite decision.

“He was very tempted to go to the trade,” the host told viewers.

“And it [the jackpot counter] dropped on the trade.

“But he wasn’t brave enough to do so!”

Stephen ultimately walked away with £3,300, while the simulated play revealed that the £10,000 jackpot was tantalisingly within reach.

It was a classic Tipping Point case of playing it safe — and then immediately discovering just how costly that decision could have been.

Tipping Point airs weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
