The Chase star Darragh Ennis was forced to admit defeat after eagle-eyed followers spotted an error in one of the “fun facts” he shared on Twitter.

The quizzing expert, known as The Menace on the ITV show, regularly posts interesting pieces of trivia for his followers. But one fact about celebrated author D.H. Lawrence and World War One pilot Manfred von Richthofen quickly came under scrutiny.

Darragh had tweeted: “Fun fact: DH Lawrence was the brother in law of Manfred Von Richthoffen, aka The Red Baron.”

It did not take long for followers to point out that the claim was inaccurate.

One follower told Darragh that while he often enjoyed his trivia posts, the information about Lawrence and the Red Baron did not appear to be correct.

They explained that Frieda, D.H. Lawrence’s wife, was actually a distant relative of Manfred von Richthofen, rather than his sister-in-law.

The follower also suggested that the family connection had led authorities during World War One to suspect Frieda might be a spy.

Darragh accepted the correction and admitted that the source he had relied on appeared to be responsible for the mistake.

“Cheers. It seems you’re right and the ‘facts’ book I read that in needed you as a researcher,” he replied.

Another follower went into further detail, pointing out differences between the backgrounds of Manfred von Richthofen and Frieda.

They noted that Richthofen was born in Wroclaw, now Poland, while Frieda was born in Metz, now France, and that their fathers were different men.

Darragh admits his mistake

Darragh responded to the second correction as well, once again acknowledging that the information he had shared was wrong.

“Yeah it seems the book I was reading had that one wrong. Whoops,” he wrote.

Rather than quietly deleting the original post, The Menace returned to it and openly acknowledged the mistake.

He wrote: “This one isn’t true it seems. That’s what I get for late night fact tweeting and not checking my sources. Thanks for setting me straight guys.”

The admission was met with corrections rather than controversy, with Darragh appearing happy to accept that his source had let him down.

The Menace on The Chase

Darragh is best known to viewers as The Menace, one of the Chasers on ITV’s popular quiz show The Chase.

The former contestant turned Chaser is known for his knowledge across a wide range of subjects, making the incorrect trivia claim an amusing slip for someone whose job is to know the answers.

The episode of The Chase scheduled for Wednesday was not due to air that week, as ITV was making way for coverage of President Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony.

The Chase continues on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
