Bradley Walsh Reveals The Chase Producers Deliberately Give Him Rude-Sounding Names — Because They Know He Won’t Be Able to Finish the Question

Bradley Walsh has produced some of The Chase’s funniest moments without a contestant winning a penny — simply by trying to read the questions placed in front of him.
The host has repeatedly dissolved into uncontrollable laughter after encountering unusual names and cheeky phrases during filming. But according to Bradley, those moments aren’t always accidental.
He revealed that the people behind the questions know exactly how easily certain words can catch him off guard — and sometimes deliberately put them in front of him just to see whether he can keep a straight face.

For most questions, Bradley races through the wording while contestants and Chasers concentrate on finding the correct answer.
But occasionally, one particular name is enough to derail everything.
“I start to go and then I can’t gather myself,” Bradley explained.
Once the laughter begins, attempting to move to the next question apparently doesn’t help.
“I try to continue reading the questions but by the time I get to the next one I’m gone,” he said. “I’ll be trying to speak but I can’t. I get caught unawares.”
And the producers appear to know exactly what works.

Bradley singled out several examples that had caught him off guard over the years, including “Willy Wakker” and “Fanny Chmelar.”
He also mentioned “Chocolate Salty Balls” among the phrases that managed to break his professional composure.
The Fanny Chmelar moment in particular became one of the programme’s memorable Bradley Walsh clips.
After seeing the name among the possible answers, Bradley struggled almost immediately.
Trying to continue only made matters worse, turning what should have been an ordinary multiple-choice question into a battle simply to read the words on the screen.
Producers Know Exactly What They’re Doing
According to Bradley, the question-writing team is well aware of his weakness.
That creates an unusual extra game within The Chase.
Contestants may be trying to beat one of Britain’s toughest quiz experts, but Bradley sometimes has a completely different challenge: discovering what the producers have slipped into his script without laughing.
The unpredictability has become part of his appeal as host.
His reactions rarely feel rehearsed because, as Bradley himself explained, the wording catches him before he has time to prepare for it.
Even Chasers such as Anne Hegerty have occasionally been caught laughing along when a question sends Bradley over the edge.
