While the King has spoken openly about his cancer journey, from the “awful metallic taste” that treatment leaves you with to the “daunting” and “frightening” experience of receiving the diagnosis, the Queen has said very little about how her husband’s diagnosis has affected her.

She frequently jokes about his need to slow down and his refusal to “do what he’s told” in pursuit of his relentless work ethic, but has seldom discussed what the impact of the diagnosis had on her – until now.

In a candid chat with the Chief Executive of cancer charity Maggie’s, the Queen speaks about suddenly having to look after her “poor husband” after he was diagnosed in January 2024. And unfortunately for her, she had the unenviable task of opening a cancer centre just days after the King’s diagnosis – and before Buckingham Palace had informed the public.

In the new film, she said she found it difficult to keep it a secret and discovered a newly forged connection when chatting with patients and their families.

Anyone in her position would have found working in an environment that hit so close to home almost impossible to undertake, but Camilla conducted the engagement with her usual poise and cheeriness – giving away no indication of what was to come.

Maggie’s, the charity the Queen is helping to shine a light on, supports not just the patients but friends and families of those who have been diagnosed with cancer.

And Camilla’s candid chat seeks to further humanise the King and Queen and remind the public that despite their titles, they are a husband and wife who had to respond to cancer in the public eye together.

There’s no understating the impact of the King’s decision to inform the public of his diagnosis and provide regular personal messages and updates along the way. It has helped improve public understanding, destigmatise the treatment journey and encourage conversations about difficult topics.

Now the Queen is carrying the torch in her own way, shining a light on a charity that helps hundreds of thousands people go through similar situations and helping to signpost people to the support networks on offer.

Together, the couple are cementing a new era of openness that will no doubt help the millions of people facing the uncertain future that cancer brings.

The overriding message from both of them is: you are not alone and by reaching out and having difficult conversations, you can get through the very worst of times.
