King Charles Clarifies Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Status After Their UK Return

King Charles has formally clarified Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s position within the monarchy following their return to Britain — making clear that their move back to the UK does not signal a return to life as working royals.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to operate as private individuals, rather than carrying out official engagements on behalf of the Sovereign. The guidance was set out in a letter authorised by the King and circulated by the Lord Chamberlain following requests for clarity about the couple’s status.

The clarification comes after Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, six years after stepping away from official royal duties and building a new life in California.

Harry and Meghan will not return as working royals

The Palace’s position is essentially a reaffirmation of the arrangements established when Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

According to the guidance, there has been “no change” to their official status following their return to the UK. They will not represent King Charles at official engagements and their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.

Any charitable activities they undertake in Britain will therefore remain separate from the official work of the Royal Family.

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” the guidance states.

No return to a ‘half-in, half-out’ arrangement

The clarification also effectively closes the door on the possibility of Harry and Meghan combining official royal duties with their independent commercial careers.

That kind of “half-in, half-out” arrangement was rejected when the couple negotiated their departure from working royal life in 2020.

Their return to Britain had renewed questions about whether their relationship with the monarchy could evolve now that they are geographically closer to the Royal Family. The King’s latest guidance, however, makes clear that their official position remains unchanged.

Harry and Meghan can continue supporting charities and causes they care about, but they will do so as private individuals rather than representatives of the Crown.

Their commercial activities will similarly remain independent from Buckingham Palace.

Palace seeks to avoid confusion

The letter was reportedly circulated beyond Harry and Meghan’s own team.

Guidance was also sent to government and military officials and Lord Lieutenants, helping organisations understand how the Sussexes should be treated now that they are once again based in Britain.

The Palace has also drawn a clear administrative line between the couple and the Royal Household.

Correspondence and administrative matters concerning Harry and Meghan are to continue going directly through their own office, which remains separate from the Royal Household. Questions involving official courtesies or potential use of public funds should be directed to Buckingham Palace, while operational security matters remain the responsibility of the relevant police authorities.

The guidance therefore establishes a straightforward distinction: Harry remains the King’s son and the couple remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but neither has returned to an official working role within the monarchy.

Sussex family returns to Britain after six years

Harry and Meghan returned to the UK with Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, at the end of August after spending roughly six years based in California.

Their move represented a significant change for a family that had established its post-royal life in the United States after leaving Britain in 2020.

Reports at the time said the family planned to remain in Britain for an extended period, with the children beginning school in the UK.

The couple’s return has inevitably attracted attention because of Harry’s complicated relationship with members of the Royal Family and the highly public nature of the Sussexes’ departure.

Since leaving royal duties, Harry and Meghan have built careers outside the monarchy. Their projects have included a Netflix documentary series, while Harry published his memoir, Spare, in 2023.

Their return to Britain, however, does not undo the agreement that allowed them to pursue that independent life.

They can undertake charitable projects, maintain commercial interests and make public appearances. But those activities should not be interpreted as official royal engagements.

Reuters reported that the King had authorised the communication to senior British officials specifically to reconfirm that the Sussexes remain non-working royals following their return.

Their physical location has changed. Their constitutional and professional position has not.

For all the speculation surrounding the Sussexes’ move back to Britain, the message from the Palace is now unambiguous: Harry and Meghan may once again be living close to the Royal Family, but the boundaries established when they stepped away in 2020 remain firmly in place.
