Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club gradually eliminates its contestants with puzzles designed to test logic and common sense.

Brett successfully navigated every challenge thrown at him until he became the only player remaining.

That left him facing the show’s ultimate puzzle and a potential £96,000 jackpot.

He didn’t have to play.

Taking the safer option would have guaranteed him £10,000, but Brett decided he had come too far to stop.

Lee appeared nervous as the contestant committed to the final question.

Then the puzzle appeared.

The £96,000 Question

Brett was asked to find the same four-letter word that could fill all three gaps and make each sentence work:

“__ I am certain that he had read the man’s notes.

I am certain that __ he had read the man’s notes.

I am certain that he had read the man’s __ notes.”

He had only 30 seconds.

Almost immediately, Brett appeared stuck.

As the clock continued counting down, he struggled to find a word that could work correctly in all three positions.

Eventually, he submitted “last.”

“I didn’t know it. I put last. I just couldn’t see it,” Brett admitted.

It wasn’t the answer.

The Answer Was Hiding in Plain Sight

Placed in each position, it changed the meaning while keeping every sentence grammatically valid:

“Only I am certain that he had read the man’s notes.”

“I am certain that only he had read the man’s notes.”

“I am certain that he had read the man’s only notes.”

The revelation prompted gasps from the studio audience as the scale of Brett’s gamble became clear.

One four-letter word had separated him from £96,000.

Although the £96,000 jackpot was gone, Brett didn’t leave completely empty-handed. He still received £1,000.

“You did brilliant to get this far,” Lee told him.

Brett may not have joined the 1% Club, but after surviving every previous round, his entire run ultimately came down to one deceptively simple word — “only.”
