‘An endlessly kind, humble & talented young man’ – Horse Sport Ireland lead tributes after tragic death of Shane Dalton
HORSE Sport Ireland have led tributes in the wake of the shock death of acclaimed show jumper Shane Dalton.
The Cork native was only 29. According to his rip.ie post, he passed away last Friday.
It reads: “In fond loving memory of our dear Shane, who passed away on the 19th of June 2026.
“Deeply missed by his beloved mother Norma, father Richard, Norma’s partner Ger, sisters Caren and Sinéad, brother Niall, brothers-in-law Philip and Dave, Niall’s partner Ine, nieces Molly and Kate, deceased nephew Noah, aunts and uncles of the Daly and Dalton families.
“Shane will be sadly missed by his relatives, extended family members and his many friends in the equestrian world.”
As word of his tragic passing has spread across the Irish equestrian community a string of tributes have followed.

Horse Sport Ireland posted: “In loving memory of Shane Dalton, an endlessly kind, humble and talented young man.
“He was the kind of person whose focus and determination saw him hugely successful in a competitive field, but modest in the spotlight of which he earned.
“Shane is a huge loss to the Irish sport horse community and will be widely missed. A son, a brother, a horseman, and a great friend.
“Our thoughts are with Shane’s family Norma, Richard, Caren, Niall, Sinead and his wide circle of friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
A further lengthy tribute also came from the Irish Horse Board’s Facebook page. It stated: “The Irish equestrian community has lost one of its brightest talents with the passing of Shane Dalton at the age of 29.
“From an early age, Shane’s passion and ability in the sport of show jumping were evident to all who watched him compete.
“His dedication, horsemanship, and natural talent saw him rise through the ranks from ponies to horses, building a reputation as one of Ireland’s most gifted young riders and producers of young horses.
“One of Shane’s earliest international successes in horses came in 2016 when he represented Ireland at Lanaken aboard his friend and mentor Gabriel Slattery’s stallion Castlelawn Captain Junior (ISH) (TIH), earning placings in these highly competitive classes.
“As the years progressed, Shane developed into an exceptional producer of young horses.
“Possessing a rare eye for talent and an innate understanding of horses, he produced numerous horses that would later go on to compete successfully at the highest levels of international show jumping, ESI Rocky and Mendoza VDL to name a couple.
“These horses are a lasting testament to Shane’s skill, patience, and dedication.
“Throughout his career, Shane enjoyed significant success in young horse classes, recording victories and notable results at some of Ireland’s most prestigious venues.
“He enjoyed success at Balmoral, the RDS and the Irish Breeders classic, most recently Shane celebrated a memorable victory at the 2025 Dublin Horse Show in the RDS, winning aboard Unicum H in the 5YO ‘Flexible’ Young Horse Championship.
“These achievements reflected not only his talent as a rider but also his outstanding ability to develop future stars of the sport.
“Yet, for all his accomplishments, Shane remained remarkably modest. He never sought recognition or praise and was never one to boast about his successes.
“Instead, he was known for his humility, his infectious smile, and his willingness to offer encouragement and support to others. Whether speaking with fellow competitors, owners, breeders, grooms, or spectators, Shane treated everyone with kindness and respect at all times.
“His warmth and generosity earned him the friendship and admiration of people throughout Ireland’s show jumping community. He was the type of person whose presence lifted those around him, and whose genuine nature left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
“Beyond the arena, Shane was a devoted son to Richard and Norma, a beloved brother to his two sisters and brother, and a cherished friend to many. Family and friends were at the heart of his life, and he treasured the time spent with those closest to him.
“Away from horses, Shane held a great passion for motorsport. He followed rallying closely and had even been contemplating a trip to the Donegal Rally this weekend, another reflection of his enthusiasm for life and the many interests that brought him joy.
“Shane Dalton was a rare talent, but more importantly, he was a genuinely good person. His contribution to Irish show jumping will be remembered through the horses he produced, the achievements he earned, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
“The sadness felt throughout the equestrian community today is a measure of the respect and affection in which he was held. We were all proud to call Shane our friend, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
“May he rest in peace. We in Irish Horse Board offer our deepest condolences to Shane’s family, friends, and everyone in the Irish show jumping community who knew and loved him.”
