The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s bizarre 2003 dark comedy-drama, was a box-office failure on its original release and has repeatedly been described as one of the worst films ever made. Yet instead of disappearing, it developed a passionate following and became a midnight-movie phenomenon.

A love triangle unlike almost anything else

Written, directed, produced by and starring Wiseau, The Room centers on Johnny, a kind-hearted banker whose seemingly happy life begins falling apart.

Johnny is engaged to Lisa, played by Juliette Danielle, but she becomes involved with his best friend Mark, played by Greg Sestero. The resulting love triangle forms the heart of a film that became famous for its unconventional storytelling, unusual dialogue, technical problems and Wiseau’s distinctive performance.

Greg Sestero wrote about his experiences making it in the memoir The Disaster Artist. That book was later adapted into the 2017 movie of the same name, starring James Franco as Wiseau.

The adaptation introduced an entirely new generation to the strange circumstances surrounding The Room and further cemented Wiseau’s movie as a piece of cult-film history.

Its legacy has continued to grow. The Room Returns, a reimagining starring Bob Odenkirk, screened in 2026 after initially being announced several years earlier.
