King Charles’ Guard Commemorates 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with Special Buckingham Palace Ceremony
Marking a solemn quarter-century milestone since the September 11 terrorist attacks, the British Army’s Band of the Coldstream Guards staged a moving commemorative Guard Change at Buckingham Palace. Marching toward the sovereign’s London residence, the soldiers opened the musical tribute with John Philip Sousa’s rousing marches “The Thunderer” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The forecourt ceremony subsequently featured poignant performances of both the British and American national anthems, alongside stirring renditions of “Amazing Grace” and John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen” from Saving Private Ryan.
Representing King Charles on the palace forecourt, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester took the ceremonial salute alongside the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Warren Stephens. Flanked by American and British officials—including British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and approximately 40 invited bilateral guests—the dignitaries observed the military salute in collective silence. The ceremony reverently honored the 2,977 lives lost in the deadliest terror attack on American soil, including 67 British citizens who perished in New York, the Pentagon, and Shanksville.
The musical tribute honored a historic royal precedent established by Queen Elizabeth II in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy in September 2001. Just two days following the attacks, the late monarch famously broke royal protocol by requesting the Coldstream Guards to play “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the Changing of the Guard. By reprising these bilateral musical honors twenty-five years later, the British Armed Forces reaffirmed the enduring cultural and diplomatic solidarity uniting the United Kingdom and the United States.
The Buckingham Palace ceremony closely follows King Charles and Queen Camilla’s personal pilgrimage to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City this past April. Accompanied by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the royal couple laid white flowers at the south reflecting pool and met with bereaved families and first responders who led recovery efforts at Ground Zero.
Bearing handwritten cards signed “Charles R” and “Camilla R,” their personal tributes reflected the crown’s unyielding commitment to standing with the American people in enduring remembrance of an unforgettable tragedy.
