Looking Back at Il Volo at Age 22: Behind the Glamour Lies an Unshakable Faith

Time may transform teenage boys into confident 30-year-old men, but there are core values in the souls of Il Volo that the passing years have never faded.

In a temptation-filled entertainment industry where early fame so easily leads to arrogance, the story of the three Il Volo members at age 22 remains a beautiful beacon whenever fans look back.

Turning back the pages of memory to 2017—when Gianluca Ginoble and Ignazio Boschetto had just turned 22, and Piero Barone was 23—the public at that time was not only captivated by their soaring high notes on stage, but also deeply moved by a very different image behind the scenes.

On May 6, 2017, the three young men were honored with a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican. Standing before the head of the Church, these international stars, who were well-accustomed to the roars of tens of thousands of fans, appeared with absolute humility and reverence.

That trip was far more than a mere diplomatic meeting. Just a day prior in Turin, they performed “Ave Maria, Mater Misericordiae” (a piece composed specifically for the Jubilee of Mercy by Romano Musumarra). The trio respectfully handed a copy of the recorded single directly to the Pope—a clear affirmation that no matter how far they traveled, they never hid or forgot their faith and roots.

When Million-Dollar Voices Sang for 200 Homeless Individuals

Yet what people treasured most about those 22-year-old men was not just their symbolic gifts, but their tangible actions toward the vulnerable.

During that same series of events, Il Volo brought their music to Via della Conciliazione in the Vatican to perform for a truly unique audience: 200 homeless individuals attending a solidarity meal organized by Caritas Italy.

There were no grand laser lights or expensive multi-thousand-dollar tickets; some of the world’s finest vocalists sang with raw sincerity to comfort those facing hardship. At an age when most of their peers were absorbed in partying or personal indulgence, the three Italian youths chose to use music as a bridge for healing and sharing.

The Character of Men Who Keep Their Youthful Vows

Many years have passed since that summer afternoon at the Vatican. Today, Il Volo are gentlemen entering their 30s, having achieved countless new records and conquered numerous summits. Yet, looking back at that age-22 milestone, fans truly understand why Il Volo has been able to journey so far together.

Their music soars high not only because of flawless Bel Canto technique, but because it is nourished by loving souls who keep their feet firmly on the ground. The 22-year-old boys of yesterday have grown up, but their compassionate hearts and steadfast faith remain as intact as the first day they stepped onto the stage.
