Def Leppard Guitarist Vivian Campbell Vows He’s ‘Certainly Not Slowing Down’ as Cancer Returns

Facing a renewed health battle with characteristic resilience, Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell revealed that his cancer has returned following a donor stem cell transplant, affirming that his passion for music and touring continues to give him “something to live for.”
During an interview on Radio YSKL, the 63-year-old rock veteran shared an update on his ongoing journey with Hodgkin lymphoma—a cancer of the lymphatic system that he has managed for over a decade. Despite the setback, Campbell expressed unwavering determination to maintain his active touring schedule and focus on living life to the fullest.

1. Navigating a Decade-Long Journey with Hodgkin Lymphoma

According to Campbell, his decision to pursue an allogeneic (donor) stem cell transplant came after his own stem cells failed to keep the disease in remission:

  • The Decision for a Donor Transplant: Campbell recalled the urgency he felt during a previous difficult phase: “There’s only been one time that I felt it was going to kill me, in the winter of 2023. I got really scared about what was happening and the pace at which it was happening. And I realized at that point that I had to do a donor transplant. It was my only hope to survive.”
  • The Recent Update: While declared in remission last year, Campbell shared that the donor procedure ultimately did not hold: “Unfortunately, it didn’t stick. So, the cancer has returned.”
  • Ongoing Management: Outlining his future medical plans, the guitarist noted: “The plan is continuing treatments to manage it. I’ll probably have to do another transplant within a few years with another donor to try and see if maybe that would cure me. But in the meantime, I’m certainly not slowing down.”

2. Music and Work as a Source of Strength

Rather than stepping away from the spotlight, Campbell credits his demanding music career with keeping him grounded and mentally energized:
  • A Purpose to Keep Moving: “The fact that I could still continue to work, that gives me something to live for — something that you enjoy, that you’re passionate about, that you can wake up in the morning and look forward to,” he explained, adding that staying active helps deflect focus away from illness.
  • Touring Ahead: Def Leppard recently concluded a major Las Vegas residency and is preparing to tour Mexico and South America this fall, with Campbell performing alongside his bandmates.

3. A Message of Resilience and Encouragement

Reflecting on his mindset, Campbell emphasized the importance of confronting fear directly and refusing to let a diagnosis dictate one’s life:

“I’ve never felt that way [staying in bed]. I’ve always felt like I’m going to continue to live my life as much as possible. Even more so after getting a cancer diagnosis, it amplifies that desire to tick all the boxes, to do the things you want to do.”
Encouraging others navigating similar health challenges to prioritize their well-being and stay proactive, Campbell concluded with a simple, powerful message: “Overcome the fear. Fear is inevitable when you’re first told those words, but once you get over that, you got to realize just how to manage it and how to deal with it as best as possible. Just don’t give in.”
