Rock legend stops show to call out fans: ‘Just said (expletive) off to the second verse’
John Mellencamp has never been shy about letting his audience know when he is not happy with what is going on in the crowd.
He made headlines in 2024 for cutting a show short and offering to meet a fan in the parking lot.
This time around, things were not as serious, but video caught the legendary singer stopping a show in Cincinnati to call out the crowd as it sang along to his iconic hit “Jack & Diane.”
“There’s two verses then the chorus,” Mellencamp calmly explained to the audience. “You guys just said (expletive) off to the second verse and just went straight to the chorus. Now, I remember when I wrote this song, I was 24 years old. And I spent all afternoon writing this second verse, so I’m gonna sing it.”
Mellencamp then went right back into the song with the crowd following along, correctly. And for the record, many of them can be heard laughing, and Mellencamp seemed to have some fun with it, too.
It was a very different vibe than his 2024 appearance in Toledo that made headlines.
Video shared to TikTok showed Mellencamp telling the crowd a story about his grandmother when someone shouted, “Play some music.”
The crowd groaned and seemed to disagree with the heckler, but that didn’t seem to matter too much to Mellencamp. He paused for a moment and then he let it out.
“What do you think I’ve been doing you (expletive),” the singer responded.
He then waived his finger in the air.
“Here’s the thing man, you don’t know me,” he said. “You don’t (expletive) know me.”
He then instructed his people to “find this guy and let me see him after the show.”
After another fan said something, he told the crowd he could stop the show and go home.
“Tell you what I’m going to do, since you have been so wonderful, I’m going to cut about 10 songs out of the show,” he said.
Mellencamp then began singing his hit “Jack and Diane,” before stopping just seconds in and saying, “You know what? Show’s over.”
He then walked offstage.
The Toledo Blade said he returned to the stage about five minutes later and performed several more songs for the crowd.
