Justin Moore Reveals He’s Newly Sober After Pausing His Tour to Go to Rehab: ‘My Drinking Got Out of Control’

The country singer said he hoped to “set a much better example” for his four children

Country singer Justin Moore is newly sober and back on tour after taking time off earlier this summer to tend to his health.

Moore, 42, told the crowd at his concert on July 9 that he’d recently spent 30 days in rehab after his “drinking got out of control,” and was marking his 31st day sober that night.

“I know some of you have probably seen — I know there’s a sign over here that says ‘Welcome back’ — that we’ve been off a while, and there was a lot of speculation, but my drinking got out of control,” he said at the show in Knoxville, Ill., according to video published by Whiskey Riff. “I let down my band and my crew and most importantly God, my family.”

The “You Look Like I Need a Drink” singer married his wife Kate in 2007 and they’re parents to daughters Ella, 16, Kennedy, 14, and Rebecca, 11, and son South, 9.

“I just became a complete dumbass,” he continued. “But so I just got out of rehab for 30 days. This is my 31st day sober. And I’m gonna try to help as many people from this point forward until my last days on earth, and hopefully set a much better example for my kiddos.”

Moore said that he’d told the crowd his life update in order to set up his 2011 song “Outlaws Like Me.”

“This is my favorite song that I’ve ever written, and kinda speaks to the one we’re talking about here,” he said. “We’re still gonna party after this, just hang with me. I feel like I’m doing the right thing by my God and everybody in there told me, ‘Dude, you gotta go use this.’ So here we go.”

Moore announced in June that he’d be hitting pause on his tour for a “short period” in order to focus on his health.

“This is the right decision for me and my family, and I appreciate everyone’s understanding and support,” he wrote in a statement shared to Instagram. “I look forward to getting back out there later this summer and doing what I love most.”

He returned to Instagram on July 7 to share a slate of tour dates that began days later in Knoxville.

“I would not still be doing this for a living if I didn’t live here,” he said. “I just wasn’t happy. I don’t think you can perform your best at your craft unless you’re happy. It was the right move for us, and it’s been wonderful.”
