Rodeo Legend J.B. Mauney Retired From Bull Riding In 2023
In September 2023, J.B. Mauney, also known as “The Dragonslayer” of bull riding, retired from the sport following a horrific injury that broke his neck. It required surgery to add “a rod, plates, screws and the removal of a disc.”
A week after his injury, he took to Facebook to announce his retirement.
“Unfortunately with the surgery it ended my bullriding career, just wanted to let everyone know that I’m ok and now on the road to recovery,” he wrote alongside a photo of him with his wife, Samantha, and their son, Jagger.
Although it was unfortunate to have his storied career end with an injury, he always knew this was how his career was going to come to a close.
In an interview with Country Rebel, Mauney said, “I would have never been able to tell myself I couldn’t do it.”
He added, “A lot of people retire because they miss time with their family, but I just brought mine every where with me so that was never going to be an issue.”
Mauney’s career includes being the 2006 PBR Rookie of the Year, 2009 PBR Challenger Tour Champion, 2009 PBR World Finals Event Champion, 2013 PBR World Finals Event Champion, 2013 PBR World Champion, and the 2015 PBR World Champion.
Now, he spends more time at at home with his son, Jagger, who has dreams of being the next legend of the family.

If you don’t know J.B. Mauney from the rodeo world, you might recognize him from Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” music video! He made a cameo alongside fellow rodeo athletes Shad Mayfield, Leighton Berry, Tyson Durfey, and Dale Brisby.

The bull rider admitted that he had no clue what he signed up for, just doing what his friend, country singer Casey Donahew, asked of him, saying, “I had no idea what I was getting into. Casey Donahew’s wife called my wife, and my wife said, ‘Hey you gotta go do a music video!’”
He revealed that even when he was on set that he didn’t realize just how big the video would be.
“Somebody called me that day asking for something and I told them I was busy in a music video. A few weeks later when it came out they said, ‘You made it off like it was just a normal music video, just a random music video, not the #1 hit going right now!’”
