The renewed speculation has reignited fierce debate, with critics arguing the late monarch’s decision was clear and should never be revisited, while others believe Harry simply wants his children to spend more time in the UK and reconnect with family.

We will never see the likes of Queen Elizabeth II again. She took no nonsense. During a crunch so-called summit at Sandringham in 2020, before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their departure from the Royal Family, she rejected the couple’s proposal of a unique “half-in, half-out” role, whereby they would only take part in some duties required by the Firm. The Sussexes said on their website that they wanted “progressive” roles as they became “financially independent”.

But Her Late Majesty was not having it, and rightly so. When it comes to the monarchy, you need to be in or out. Otherwise, the institution would become way too porous. In order to survive, the Crown must remain united with a firm purpose and vision: to provide symbolic leadership of the nation, back Britain at home and abroad and help noble causes. Harry and Meghan have instead sought to actively sabotage the institution, even when the UK’s longest-serving sovereign was still with us, causing unneeded problems during her final years.

Now, as the former Queen is meant to be resting in peace at Windsor next to her husband, Prince Philip, she will no doubt be turning in her grave as reports suggest that Harry and Meghan are trying once again to carve out a role similar to the one she forbade several years ago.

Royal commentator Kevin O’Sullivan told Sky News Australia that the prince is “obsessed” with creating a “half-in, half-out” royal lifestyle by splitting his time between the United States and Britain.

Royal historian Marlene Koenig told The Mirror: “It is inevitable that Harry would want to spend more time in his homeland with his children.” She added: “But Harry wants his kids to connect with the UK and, perhaps, with family.”

Harry is no doubt buoyed by a meeting behind closed doors he had with Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, with the King and Queen at Highgrove House earlier this month, while he was in the UK.

It seems he could be using this as a springboard to carve out a bigger role in Britain, as he is reportedly missing his old life here.

The group could have ensured the monarchy’s success for decades to come. The Crown is still in a good place, with a solid line of succession. But it could have been even more effective.

Harry and Meghan would have resonated with people – those younger and of different backgrounds – who perhaps would not be as excited about William and Catherine.

A way in is, no doubt, the King himself, who will want to see his grandchildren more often.

Ms Koenig also said that “the fact that Charles and the Palace apparently took control of the Highgrove meeting – and there have been no leaks – is a sign that Charles wants to heal this relationship privately”.
