There’s one thing that Zeppelin fans have been waiting a long time for, and that’s to hear Robert Plant return to the mic one more time to sing “Stairway to Heaven.” It’s the band’s signature song, but Plant is famously not so fond of the megahit. However, at one special charity gig last year, the legendary singer delivered the goods for the fans, and boy was it worth the wait. The charity show marked the first time that Plant has performed the song since 2007, which is a 16-year wait.

Former Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor organised the charity gig for The Cancer Awareness Trust. An anonymous bidder donated a six-figure amount to the Trust for the show, and requested that Plant appear to sing the classic hit. Ever the gentleman, Plant appeared and sang the beautiful melodies of “Stairway to Heaven” while Taylor provided the famous guitar lines. The Music Man is pleased to report that the 75-year-old Plant still has the golden voice that made him a huge star.

Plant performed “Stairway to Heaven” on October 21, 2023, at the Soho Farmhouse near Chipping Norton, England. The organizer Taylor is fighting stage four metastatic prostate cancer, and all proceeds from the night went to The Cancer Awareness Trust. Plant and Taylor were joined by an all-star band on the night, with appearances from Whitesnake’s Dino Jelusick, Rod Stewart drummer David Palmer, and Pink Floyd bassist Guy Pratt.

As is common with rock singers, at 75, Plant doesn’t quite have the same range that he had in the 1970s. That said, he still sounds great and delivered an intense and soulful performance on the night. Since its 1971 release, Led Zep have performed many memorable versions of “Stairway to Heaven,” often featuring extended and fresh takes on the song. One particularly fiery version was when the band performed the hit live at Earls Court, London, in 1975.

The Music Man readers may recall that Plant has a complicated relationship with “Stairway to Heaven.” Although he performed it often back in the day with Zep, Plant has become reluctant to sing the song throughout his later career. The frontman acknowledges that musically the song has a lot of weight to it, but has made it clear that he no longer connects with his lyrics on the tune. Plant discussed his history with “Stairway to Heaven” on Uncle Joe Benson’s Ultimate Classic Rock Nights radio show in 2019. The frontman explained that “Of course it was a good song. Lyrically, now, I can’t relate to it because it was so long ago. I have no intention ever to write along those abstract lines anymore.”
