Funeral held for soldier who died at Royal Windsor Horse Show
Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan recently qualified as an advanced regimental riding instructor and served at the Queen’s funeral and the King’s coronation.
A funeral has taken place for a soldier who died after falling from her horse at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
The coffin was draped with the Union flag and arrived at the Guards’ Chapel, Wellington Barracks, on a gun carriage as a trumpet fanfare rang out.
Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan suffered serious injuries after leaving the arena on 15 May and died at the scene.
Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
The King and other royals were present but weren’t told about the severity of the situation until later.
A spokesperson said the monarch was “greatly shocked and saddened” and would be contacting the family to share his condolences.
Friends, colleagues and senior staff gathered to pay their respects at the chapel in central London on Tuesday.
Three shots were fired from the barracks, near Buckingham Palace, and the soldier’s horse Neymar carried her riding boots in reverse in its stirrups – a traditional mark of respect.
Her cap and medals were among personal items presented to her family.
Lance Bombardier Sullivan entered the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, in June 2021, and had recently qualified as an advanced regimental riding instructor.
She was also deployed at the Queen’s funeral in 2022 and the King’s coronation the following year.
Her commanding officer said in a tribute issued by the Ministry of Defence: “Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, ‘Sully’ to her friends, was to all who had the privilege of serving alongside her, a bright light in any room she entered.
“An immensely professional soldier and an exceptional jockey, she approached every day within The Troop with an infectious energy – the kind that lifted those around her without effort or intention – and was unfailingly present for her comrades in both the small moments and the hard ones.”
Lance Bombardier Sullivan offered riding lessons to the mounted gunners in her sub-section and was often nominated to instruct officers in the King’s Troop, the MoD added.
It said: “She was passionate about everything to do with The Troop and participated in every extra activity available, including show jumping and The Troop Race.”
“Our Lives Are Forever Darker”: A Mother’s Agony
The emotional pinnacle of the service arrived when Sullivan’s family stepped up to the pulpit to deliver the main eulogy. Clutching one another for support, her family delivered a raw, unvarnished look into the devastating reality of outliving a child, painting a beautiful picture of the vibrant girl behind the heavily decorated military uniform.
“There are no words in the human language to describe the sheer agony of a parent having to bury their child,” her mother whispered, her voice trembling violently as she looked toward the flag-draped coffin. “Ciara was our absolute pride and joy. Every single time we saw her on television—whether she was standing guard at the late Queen’s funeral or riding proudly during the King’s coronation—our hearts swelled with so much love it felt like they would burst. To know that her bright, infectious laughter has been permanently silenced is a reality we do not know how to survive. Our lives are vĩnh viễn darker without her.”
Her family shared stories of Ciara’s lifelong obsession with horses, recounting how, even as a little girl, she possessed a fearless, gentle spirit that could calm the most volatile animals. They described a young woman who lived life at an absolute sprint, completely dedicated to her craft and fiercely protective of her friends.
“She died doing exactly what she loved, in the place where she felt most alive,” her brother added through tears. “But the price we have to pay as a family—this lifelong emptiness, this quiet house, this shattered future—is a heavy burden we will have to carry until our very last breath. We must learn to accept a world without Ciara, and right now, that feels completely impossible.”
A Bright Light Extinguished in the Barracks
Following the family’s moving testimony, Sullivan’s commanding officer took the podium to deliver a ringing endorsement of her character, reiterating the official tributes issued by the Ministry of Defense.
