Meghan Markle officially joined the Royal Family in 2018 when she married Prince Harry. Not being from a royal background herself, the Duchess has revealed what surprised her most about life in The Firm.

Meghan and Harry first met and started dating in 2016, and their romance quickly blossomed. Harry confirmed his relationship with Meghan in November of the same year, via a statement through his spokesperson, because “his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment.” Meghan first realised life in The Firm was not what she expected when she met Princess Catherine and Prince William for the first time.

In the second episode of the Harry & Meghan docuseries, Meghan says: “I met her [Kate] for the first time, I think we went for dinner.

“I remember I was in ripped jeans and barefoot. I was a hugger, I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that was jarring for a lot of Brits.”

On what surprised her most, she added: “I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being … but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me.”

Once known as the “fab four”, Harry and William went from being close brothers to estranged – partly as a result of the release of Harry’s book Spare.

Omid Scobie, in his book, wrote that Princess Catherine, who apparently “wasn’t a fan” of Meghan, “can be cold if she doesn’t like someone.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left their royal duties in 2020.

They now live in Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Now, there are rumours swirling that Prince Harry would like to reconcile with his family. The Sussexes and their two children visited the UK in July to mark the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham in 2026.

While they were here, they were hosted privately by King Charles and Queen Camila at Highgrove House. Prince Harry did not meet with his brother, Prince William, while on the trip.
