Following its 2021 premiere, concerns mounted that this compelling Irish crime thriller might have vanished for good – but it has returned, much to viewers’ delight.
Those seeking a fresh crime drama to immerse themselves in can rest assured they’ll be captivated by this BBC production, which became amongst Ireland’s most-watched programmes.
Kin is an Irish drama co-created by Peter McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly, shot and situated in Dublin. The programme centres on a fictional family embroiled in a brutal gangland war.
Initially broadcast on RTÉ One, the series attracted interest from both Netflix and BBC after gaining significant traction, enabling a second series to be commissioned.
Leading this hard-edged narrative are Aidan Gillen and Ciarán Hinds, portraying opposing gang leaders Frank Kinsella and Eamon Cunningham respectively, reports the Irish Mirror.

The cast also features Charlie Cox as Michael Kinsella, Clare Dunne as Amanda Kinsella and Emmett J. Scanlan as Jimmy Kinsella.
After watching, audiences have rushed to share enthusiastic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. One says: “Tense, riveting drama. Strong performances. Highly recommend.”

The series proved a springboard for several cast members’ careers, with Sam Keeley subsequently appearing in the HBO drama Task, while Scanlan secured a part in Netflix’s Fool Me Once.

However, following years of silence, devotees began to wonder whether Kin had concluded after its second series broadcast in 2023.
Recent reports indicate that filming with the complete cast is due to commence this July as production returns to Dublin. Despite the speculation, no official announcement regarding a third series has yet been made.
A spokesperson for Irish broadcaster RTE previously told the Irish Mirror: “Kin has been an extremely popular series for RTE and if and when there’s something to announce, we will be delighted to do so.”
Loyal followers will undoubtedly be overjoyed at its return, and in the meantime, both existing series of Kin appear well worth watching, given that audiences have awarded it a perfect 100% overall rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Drawing parallels between the Irish drama and Peaky Blinders, one reviewer writes: “Absolutely brilliant, one of the best I’ve seen up there with Peekys, the acting throughout is superb and the storyline is gripping, season two just as good, hope there is a season three!”.
