Tipping Point’s Ben Shephard jokes about “treason” after contestant makes hilarious royal blunder

A seemingly straightforward question about the Royal Family left one Tipping Point contestant red-faced — and gave host Ben Shephard the perfect opportunity for a teasing accusation of “treason”.

The amusing moment happened during a recent episode of the ITV quiz show, when contestants were answering questions in an effort to win coins for the machine and build up their potential cash prize.

But when Cleland was asked about the Duchess of Cambridge, his rushed response left Ben and the rest of the studio momentarily speechless.

Contestant panics over simple royal question

Ben asked Cleland: “What is the maiden name of the Duchess of Cambridge?”

Cleland immediately hit the buzzer and confidently answered: “Kate.”

There was an awkward pause.

Ben appeared stunned by the response before repeating the question, this time placing extra emphasis on the words “maiden name” in an apparent attempt to help the contestant realise what was being asked.

The presenter also pulled a series of faces as he tried to give Cleland a subtle hint that his first answer wasn’t correct.

It eventually dawned on Cleland that he had misunderstood the question.

He turned red, covered his face with his hand and shook his head in embarrassment as the other contestants laughed at the unfortunate mistake.

Ben Shephard brands the answer “treason”

Rather than letting the awkward moment pass, Ben seized the opportunity to tease Cleland.

“You panicked a little bit, went for it, and got it wrong – that’s treason!” the presenter joked.

Cleland continued to blush and shake his head as the studio reacted to the exchange.

Ben himself appeared amused and slightly embarrassed by the situation, while the other contestants chuckled at their fellow player’s royal mix-up.

The question was referring to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, whose maiden name was Middleton.

The moment demonstrated just how quickly contestants can lose their composure under the pressure of the buzzer — even when faced with a question they might otherwise have known immediately.

A memorable moment from Tipping Point

Tipping Point combines general-knowledge questions with an arcade-style coin-pusher machine.

Contestants compete to answer questions correctly and earn counters, which they then place into the machine. The aim is to trigger coins to fall from the shelves and increase their eventual cash total.

For Cleland, however, the pressure of answering quickly resulted in an answer that left him wishing he had taken a few extra seconds to think.

Ben’s playful “treason” remark turned the mistake into one of the episode’s most memorable moments.

Tipping Point is available to watch on ITV.
