A seemingly straightforward question on Tipping Point sparked a wave of frustration among ITV viewers after contestant Robin gave an answer that appeared historically accurate — only for host Ben Shephard to reject it.
The disagreement came during the quickfire round, where contestants have just 30 seconds to answer as many questions as possible in exchange for valuable counters.
With Robin hoping to build an early advantage, he was asked:
“In which present-day country was tennis player Martina Navratilova born?”
His answer was immediate:
“Czechoslovakia.”
But Ben Shephard ruled it incorrect and supplied the expected answer: “The Czech Republic.”
For viewers watching at home, however, the decision was far from clear-cut.

‘He Was Right!’
Martina Navratilova was born in Prague in 1956. At that time, Prague was part of Czechoslovakia, which remained a country until its peaceful dissolution in 1993.
The Czech Republic — now officially known as Czechia — subsequently became the modern state that includes Prague.
That historical detail was enough to convince many Tipping Point viewers that Robin had been unfairly penalised.
Social media quickly filled with complaints.
One viewer wrote: “#TippingPoint Navratilova WAS born in Czechoslovakia. He was right.”
Another pointed out the timeline, writing: “Martina Navratilova was born in 1956 so was born in Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic didn’t exist until 1993. Do your research #tippingpoint.”
A third viewer called the decision “Harsh!”, while another argued: “Martina Navratilova was born in Czechoslovakia cause at the time of her birth the Czech Republic didn’t exist.”
Someone else simply protested: “Not letting him have Czechoslovakia?! Meanie Ben!! #TippingPoint.”

But Was Ben Shephard Actually Wrong?
Despite the outrage, there was an important distinction in the wording of the question.
The question did not ask where Navratilova was born at the time of her birth. It specifically asked for the present-day country.
Under that wording, “the Czech Republic” was the expected modern-day answer.
Robin’s response was historically accurate, but it referred to the name of the country that existed when Navratilova was born rather than the country’s current political identity.
That distinction explains why Shephard refused to award the answer, even though many viewers understandably felt Robin had demonstrated genuine knowledge.
The incident nevertheless highlighted one of the perennial frustrations of quiz shows: a technically precise question can produce an answer that is historically correct but doesn’t match the wording or answer key being used by the programme.
Robin’s Run Comes to an End
Unfortunately for Robin, the disputed answer did not change the outcome of the competition.
After the quickfire round, Robin was eliminated, leaving Kathryn and Amos to battle it out in the later stages of the show.
Amos initially held the advantage, but Kathryn managed to overtake him in the penultimate round.
She eventually moved £100 ahead, sending Amos home and securing her place in the final.
Kathryn performed strongly in the endgame, answering all of her questions correctly and choosing three counters from each category.
However, despite her solid performance, she could not get the £10,000 jackpot counter into the winning position.
She was then offered £2,500 and decided to take the money rather than risk it in the final trade.
The decision proved to be the sensible one, as the subsequent trade showed that she would have been worse off had she gambled.
A Question That Divided Viewers
The controversy surrounding Robin’s answer ultimately came down to one small but significant phrase: “present-day.”
From a historical perspective, Robin was absolutely correct that Navratilova was born in Czechoslovakia.
From the perspective of the question’s wording, however, the programme was looking for the modern country.
That technical distinction may have settled the matter for the show, but it did little to stop viewers from debating whether Robin deserved the point.
For many watching at home, the question was simple: if a contestant gives an answer that accurately describes the country where someone was born at the time of their birth, should that answer count?
It was a small moment in an afternoon quiz show — but for Tipping Point fans, it was enough to get the debate going.
