The Chase star Mark Labbett exploded during the latest instalment of the ITV quiz show as fans called for one major change to the rules in the nail-biting final chase. On Wednesday (January 28), host Bradley Walsh returned to the helm, welcoming four new players onto the teatime show. He introduced Katheryn, Paddy, Kamal, and Savannah to the viewers at home before they put their general knowledge to the test.
This week, the quartet went up against Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, who certainly brought his A-game. First up to the podium was online teacher Katheryn, who wowed viewers with an impressive score of £6,000 in the cash-builder round.
Despite her successful round, the teacher opted to go with the low offer of £600 in the head-to-head round. After a nail-biting round, the blonde beauty managed to secure her place in the final round and added her winnings to the joint jackpot.
Next to take on the brainiac was maths teacher Paddy, who earned a staggering £7,000 in the cash-builder round, which he narrowly managed to add to the team’s winnings after a gripping head-to-head round. Up next was businessman Kamal, who decided to follow in Katheryn’s footsteps after he achieved just £4,000 in the cash-builder round.
After seeing the success of his fellow contestants, he decided to play for the low offer of £400 after liaising with his team, securing his place in the final round. Finally, Savannah put her money where her mouth was and played for her earnings, an impressive £5,000.
Despite receiving backlash from fans online for two players opting to play for the low offer, even though they held their own in the cash-builder round, all four players secured their place in the final chase with a hefty cash prize of £13,000 between them. And they certainly didn’t let their nerves get the best of them in the final game, correctly answering 22 questions in just two minutes.
Doting dad Mark was visibly sweating under the collar during the final game, stumbling on several questions throughout the time-sensitive round, giving the team of four all the ammunition they needed to push him back. It was at this point that the quizzer slammed the desk and shouted “idiot” after he got a fourth question wrong in the hot seat.
And their tactics actually paid off, with the quartet walking away with their winnings after the Chaser answered only 15 questions correctly, meaning the players divided the money evenly, sending them home with £3,250 each. After watching the impressive game play out on screen, viewers flocked to X – formerly known as Twitter – to call for one major rule change to the long-running quiz show.
One user penned: “They should collect what they each brought to the table. It’s only fair,” as another agreed: “To stop these low offer players, the producers should change it so you only get what you bank, that would make the show more interesting, in my opinion.”
A third echoed: “The low offer should be scrapped,” as a fourth chimed in with: “£3,250 each, which Kamal & Katheryn don’t deserve, so £6,500 each for Savannah & Paddy [thumbs up emoji].”
