Shocking moment Argentina fans clash with police as riots erupt on streets of Buenos Aires after World Cup defeat
VICIOUS riots erupted on the streets of Buenos Aires last night following Argentina’s agonising loss to Spain in the World Cup final.
Thousands gathered in the streets of the Argentinian capital to watch the match, but after the final whistle the losers’ frustrations boiled over.
Riots broke out at around 11.45pm when bitter fans clashed with cops on the streets.
At least 15 people were arrested, and several civilians and police officers injured, according to Argentine newspaper Infobae.
The brawl was sparked when several fans climbed over the protective fence of the Obelisk – a 67.5-meter-tall national monument.
Suddenly chaos broke out as fans began launching glass bottles and other objects at police.
Cops sprayed tear gas and used water cannons and rubber bullets in a desperate attempt to calm the mob.
Seven police officers sustained multiple injuries from the horror clash which lasted 20 minutes, the outlet reports.
Several people were also injured, including a man who was kicked in the face by a rioter.
A woman also required medical attention but her condition remains unknown.
As police advanced from Corrientes Avenue to Belgrano Avenue and continued south through the city, the crowd began to retreat.
Images from the city show riot police armed with shields and batons storming through the streets littered with debris.
In one photograph a police officer appears to be kicking a man on the ground.
Spain beat defending champions Argentina in their second-ever World Cup win last night.
But it was not just fans causing havoc after Ferran Torres secured a goal in extra time to hand Spain a 1-0 win.
Argentina’s own players caused a mass brawl on the pitch after their loss.
Seconds after the game ended Leandro Paredes went after Spain ace Gavi, throwing punches and lobbing him to the ground.
As a result of his behaviour, referee Slavko Vincic showed Paredes a red card.
And Manager Scaloni was also pictured in a confrontation with former Manchester City star Eric Garcia.
Despite the loss, Argentinians will be granted a national holiday.
President Javier Milei announced the move hours after Rodri lifted the World Cup trophy.
But the date will be decided by the national teams players and coaches, he added.
An English translation of Milei’s post in X in Spanish said: “WORLD CELEBRATION.
“Given the concern about the celebrations for the achievement reached by the Argentine National Team, I inform the population that, depending on what the players and the technical staff decide regarding the day to celebrate, it will be declared a national holiday.”
