Michael McIntyre has become a household name after finding fame on the British comedy circuit. The stand-up star, who turns 50 this weekend, boasts a whole host of huge hits on his CV, including The Wheel, Mock the Week and self-titled series, Big Show and Comedy Roadshow.

The floppy-haired star, who became the highest paid comedian in the world in 2012 with ticket sales of a staggering £21 million from a 71 date tour, is still very much in high demand.

However, when he’s not larking about on stage, cracking jokes for his legion of loyal fans, Michael enjoys spending time with his family, including beloved wife Kitty, who has a very famous family…

Famous in-laws

Michael has been married to aromatherapist, Kitty, who has famous family, since 2003. Kitty’s dad is actor Simon Ward, and her sister, Sophie Ward, is also in the acting industry.

Simon, who died away in 2012, was best known for playing Winston Churchill in the 1972 film Young Winston, as well as for his roles in Judge John Deed and The Tudors.

Meanwhile, Sophie played the recurring role of Dr Helen Trent in the long-running ITV drama Heartbeat, and also portrayed Sophia Byrne in Holby City.

‘Stalking’ his wife

Michael first met Kitty in his early twenties and spent two years trying to woo her to go on a date with him.

“We had a really good start and I think she really liked me but I didn’t know how to handle that,” he said on Desert Island Discs in 2011, explaining how he’d announced to his family that he was going to marry Kitty after their first date.

Opening up about the couple’s early days in his 2010 book, Life and Laughing, Michael shared his first impressions of Kitty, gushing: “She was the girl I had been looking for. In the romantic comedy that was my life, this would have made a good ending.

“We would fall happily ever after. Within moments of seeing her and chatting to her I was totally up for that ending. Unfortunately, she wasn’t.”

Determined to win Kitty over, Michael would often phone her, resulting in a “record-breaking” number of missed calls as he was reluctant to leave messages on an answer phone. Playfully referring to himself as a “stalker”, Michael admitted how he even ended up moving into a flat over the road from the future Mrs McIntyre.

Grandma tries to sabotage relationship

While Michael eventually managed to successfully propose to Kitty, his grandmother struggled to accept the new lady in his life.

Sadly, this turned into a rather “vicious” state of affairs, with the comedian admitting: “Unfortunately my grandma didn’t really like it when I got a girlfriend.

“She was trying to break us up which was funny for a while but then it became quite vicious, an untenable situation.”

Kids

After finally settling down, Michael and Kitty welcomed two sons, Lucas and Oscar, who are often referenced in Michael’s stand-up routines.

In one of his more memorable jokes about his offspring, Michael said: “My son’s got two words: car and map, that’s all he can say. ‘Car, car, map, car!’ I’m fairly worried he’s trying to escape. So if the next word is passport, we’re in serious trouble.”

Now his kids are older, the stand-up star revealed that they are not bowled over with his stellar success. Speaking to the Mail on Sunday in 2020, he said: “I have only done this Netflix show to appear cool to them, but they watch other things. I am not a comedy star in their eyes. My teenage son thinks I am a very annoying person.”

Lavish pad

Michael has raked in substantial wealth as a sought-after comic and television personality, splashing out on lavish pads in posh London suburb, Hampstead, and Wiltshire.

The comic really went to town on the property ladder in 2020, dropping a cool £10million on a London pad that features eight bedrooms, alongside a subterranean swimming pool, its own cinema, as well as spa and gym facilities.
