The Chase Contestant’s Unusual Name Distracts Viewers Before Risky Move Sparks Backlash

A contestant on The Chase became an unexpected talking point among viewers after his unusual name inspired a stream of jokes — before his decision at the table gave fans something else entirely to argue about.
Bradley Walsh welcomed Chris, Chloe, Ekow and Jo into the ITV studio as the four contestants attempted to build a prize fund and defeat Shaun Wallace, better known as The Dark Destroyer.
But shortly after Ekow’s name appeared on screen, viewers began noticing its similarity to the word “echo.”
Ekow’s Name Gets Viewers Talking

The coincidence quickly became a running joke among viewers watching at home, with several playing on the idea of his name being repeated like an echo.
One viewer simply repeated “Ekow” numerous times, while another joked that they felt they had heard his name before.
Ekow even appeared to join in with the joke himself, prompting further amusement from viewers.
But the lighthearted reaction changed once it was time for him to face Shaun.
A Risky Decision Changes the Mood
Earlier, teammate Chloe had delivered an impressive performance and successfully accepted a high offer worth £25,000.
Ekow, a 28-year-old football coach, followed her into the Cash Builder but managed only two correct answers.
Determined to reach the Final Chase, he then made a controversial decision: rather than protect the money already accumulated by the team, he accepted Shaun’s minus £2,000 offer.
That reduced the team’s total prize fund to £23,000.
Taking a negative offer has long divided The Chase viewers, and Ekow’s choice immediately triggered criticism from some watching the episode.
Several viewers attacked the decision online, with the playful jokes about his name quickly giving way to much harsher reactions.
Shaun Wallace Ends Their £23,000 Dream
Despite the controversy, Ekow made it through his head-to-head and returned to the team for the Final Chase.
The remaining contestants eventually played for the £23,000 prize fund, hoping they had done enough to keep The Dark Destroyer behind them.
It wasn’t enough.
Shaun successfully caught the team with 14 seconds remaining, bringing their attempt to win the money to an end.
What began as an episode dominated by jokes about one contestant’s unusual name ultimately became another classic The Chase debate — this time over whether taking a negative offer was worth the price of securing a place in the final.
