A Who Wants To Be A Millionaire contestant decided £32,000 was simply too much money to gamble after encountering a £64,000 question so difficult that even Jeremy Clarkson admitted he was virtually no help.

Contestant Natalie had successfully climbed her way through the game before facing a geography question asking her to identify the largest by area from four popular tourist lakes: Lake Windermere, Lake Garda, Lake Tahoe or Lake Titicaca.

With £64,000 within reach, Natalie turned to Clarkson for help — only to discover that the host was struggling almost as much as she was.

Natalie immediately acknowledged that geography was not one of her strongest subjects and asked Clarkson what he thought.

The presenter attempted to reason through the possibilities. He ruled against Windermere, recalled Garda as the largest of the Italian lakes and admitted that while he knew Titicaca was exceptionally deep, he wasn’t confident enough to point Natalie toward an answer.

“This is a nightmare question,” Clarkson admitted, eventually telling her: “So I’m literally useless to you. I am so sorry.”

That left Natalie with another option: Phone A Friend.

She called her brother Dan, hoping he could provide the certainty she needed. Instead, his immediate reaction was: “Ooh, that’s a tough one.”

£32,000 or One More Answer

With neither Clarkson nor her brother able to give her enough confidence, Natalie faced a painful decision.

She could gamble her existing winnings for a chance to reach £64,000 — or stop immediately and leave with £32,000 guaranteed.

Natalie ultimately chose the money.

“I’m too unsure. I can’t risk losing that much,” she explained before making her decision final.

But Clarkson wasn’t finished.

Once Natalie was safely out of the game, he asked which answer she would have selected if she had decided to take the risk.

Her response made the ending considerably more painful.

“Something in the back of my mind was saying Titicaca, I don’t know why,” Natalie admitted.

Her Instinct Had Been Right

The answer was revealed as Lake TiticacaCredit: ITV

Lake Titicaca was indeed the correct answer.

Clarkson revealed that Natalie would have reached the £64,000 safety net had she trusted that instinct, explaining that Titicaca dwarfed the other three choices by area.

It was a brutal revelation after she had already walked away, but Clarkson made clear that he understood why she had refused to gamble such a significant amount of money.

“You would have got the right answer, but I don’t blame you for not risking it,” he told her.

Natalie therefore left Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with £32,000 — but also with the knowledge that the answer capable of doubling her money had been sitting in the back of her mind all along.
