Prince William and Princess Kate Issue Rare Joint Statement After Devastating Nepal Floods

Prince William and Princess Kate have issued a rare joint message expressing their shock and sympathy after catastrophic flash floods devastated communities along the Nepal-China border, leaving hundreds dead and many more missing.

The Prince and Princess of Wales shared the statement on Thursday as rescue teams continued searching through some of the worst-hit areas. The disaster has destroyed homes and critical infrastructure, while thick mud, debris and damaged roads have made efforts to reach survivors increasingly difficult.

“The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking,” William and Catherine said.

“We are thinking of everyone caught up in this terrible disaster. Our thoughts are especially with the families facing an unbearable wait for news and with the communities confronting such immense loss.”

The couple also praised those involved in the emergency response, saying they were “incredibly grateful” to people working in dangerous conditions to rescue survivors and support affected communities.

They signed the personal message with their initials, “W & C.”

Hundreds Dead as Search Operations Continue

The floods struck the Bhote Koshi River region on August 26, causing widespread destruction across communities close to Nepal’s border with Tibet.

The situation has developed rapidly, with casualty and missing-person figures changing as authorities reach previously inaccessible areas. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on August 27 that 359 bodies had been recovered and 596 people from 33 countries remained missing at that point.

Earlier reports had placed the number of missing people in Nepal at 826, illustrating how quickly figures were being revised as authorities attempted to verify who had been located and who remained unaccounted for.

Among those feared missing were dozens of British citizens. Earlier figures from Nepalese authorities listed 33 UK nationals as unaccounted for, including a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy.

The flooding caused rivers to surge through populated areas, damaging or destroying homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other essential infrastructure. Nepalese security forces, disaster-management agencies, health services and local authorities were mobilized for rescue, evacuation and emergency relief operations.

UK Announces £5 Million in Support

The UK government announced £5 million in humanitarian assistance to support Nepal’s response to the disaster.

The funding is intended to help relief and recovery efforts through organizations including the United Nations, Red Cross and NGOs. The UK has also deployed a Rapid Deployment Team to Nepal to reinforce British Embassy personnel and provide additional assistance to affected British nationals and their families.

Specially trained crisis-response staff were scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on August 29 and work alongside local authorities and embassy officials.

William and Kate’s intervention came as the scale of the disaster continued to emerge and families in Nepal and abroad waited for information about relatives who had not yet been accounted for.

Their message focused particularly on that uncertainty, offering support to families enduring what the couple described as an “unbearable wait for news,” while paying tribute to rescuers continuing their work amid dangerous conditions.
