Piers Morgan was used to handling heated debates and unpredictable live television, but sitting beneath the studio lights of The Chase proved to be a very different experience.

The Good Morning Britain presenter admitted he was left sweating and in a “world of pain” after stumbling over what should have been an easy question during a celebrity edition of the ITV quiz show — while co-star Susanna Reid wasted no time making his embarrassment worse.

Morgan, then 54, filmed the special alongside Reid, Kate Garraway and Richard Arnold, with the episode scheduled to air later in 2019.

One ‘Easy’ Question Changed Everything

Speaking on Good Morning Britain the morning after filming, Morgan admitted that taking on a Chaser felt considerably more intimidating from inside the studio than it looked from the sofa.

“We filmed The Chase yesterday, it’s not airing until November, thank god because there’s a good chance I might be out of the country,” he joked.

He said the pressure intensified once the cameras were rolling and a Chaser was closing in, admitting there were moments when his brain “literally froze.”

Then came the mistake he clearly knew his colleagues would not let him forget.

“I scuffed an easy question,” Morgan confessed.

According to him, the question was supposed to be a straightforward one designed to help him settle into the game. Instead, it caught him off guard.

“It was supposed to be an easy one to get you in the mood and then it turned out to be a real little zinger so it threw me and then I was in a world of pain,” he said.

Sitting alongside Morgan as he described his ordeal, Reid couldn’t resist teasing him about the supposedly simple mistake.

“Oh dear, what comes between A and C in the alphabet?” she joked.

Her comment offered a tantalizing hint that Reid may have enjoyed a more successful experience on the quiz than her co-host.

Exactly what Morgan got wrong — and how badly the mistake affected his performance — was being kept secret until the celebrity special aired.

The identity of the Chaser they faced was also initially withheld.

‘It’s a Lot Easier Watching at Home’

Morgan had already warned viewers that the experience had been much tougher than he expected.

After filming, he shared a photograph of Reid with host Bradley Walsh and admitted that attempting the quiz inside the studio had completely changed his perspective on the show.

“Wow… to say it’s a lot easier watching at home is the understatement of the century,” he wrote.

Despite the pressure, he described filming the program as “great fun.”

Reid also shared a photograph with Walsh, saying she had enjoyed appearing on The Chase as part of Team GMB.

But even before entering the studio, Morgan had admitted that the team was nervous.

“We’re all a bit worried because we all began to watch it a few days ago and we can’t get any of the questions right,” he said.

Those concerns apparently weren’t entirely misplaced.

Piers Hints That Things Didn’t Go His Way

Morgan continued dropping clues about his performance after fellow presenter Ranvir Singh recalled her own stressful experience competing on The Chase.

Singh said the pressure of the show could make a contestant’s “brain turn to jelly.”

Morgan’s response was revealing without giving away the result.

“Our lips are sealed until November… but let’s just say I can identify with your experience!”

The remark only added to speculation that Morgan’s appearance had not gone quite as smoothly as he hoped.

Meanwhile, Reid’s playful reaction suggested there might be even more ammunition waiting for her when viewers finally saw the episode.

From Confident Presenter to ‘World of Pain’

The Chase had already been an ITV fixture for a decade by the time Morgan and his colleagues entered the studio. The quiz, hosted by Bradley Walsh, first launched in 2009 and had produced more than 1,000 episodes and at least 100 celebrity editions by the time the GMB team took part.

For Morgan, however, years of television experience offered little protection once the clock started ticking.
