The 1% Club may be built around logic, observation and increasingly difficult questions, but one of the moments host Lee Mack remembered most clearly from filming had nothing to do with solving a puzzle.

One contestant simply needed the show to move faster.

Speaking about memorable incidents behind the scenes of the ITV quiz, Lee revealed that one player repeatedly asked production to speed things up because he was desperately waiting to use the toilet.

It was an unexpected moment from the early days of a show where contestants could have as much as £100,000 riding on a single answer.

And according to Lee, the pressure inside the studio proved much more intense than he had anticipated.

One Contestant Had a Very Different Reason to Feel the Pressure

The format begins with 100 contestants, who are gradually eliminated as the questions become more difficult.

Unlike traditional quiz shows, success is not primarily determined by how much general knowledge someone possesses. Instead, contestants face questions involving reasoning, common sense and logic, eventually working toward a final challenge designed to be answerable by only 1% of people.

With that much money available, viewers might expect contestants to be completely focused on reaching the jackpot.

But Lee recalled one player whose immediate priority became considerably more basic.

“One of the funniest moments we had during filming was a chap who was desperate for us to get going as he was dying for the loo and kept asking us to do it quicker!” he said.

The contestant’s identity was not given in the account, but the incident clearly stayed with the host.

Lee Mack Was Surprised by How Tense the Game Became

The correct answer was indeed 'forty'.

Away from the lighter moments, Lee admitted that filming the competition became more nerve-racking than he expected.

A crucial part of the format is the decision contestants face as they approach the end. Surviving long enough does not automatically mean they should risk everything on the toughest question.

They have to decide whether to protect what they have or continue chasing the biggest possible prize.

Lee said that decision created an “electric” atmosphere inside the studio.

After spending the episode talking to contestants and learning more about them, he found himself genuinely wanting them to succeed.

With as much as £100,000 potentially available, watching somebody get extremely close only to lose their chance could be particularly painful.

One Familiar Face Had an Unusual Plan for the Money

Many viewers didn't get it either.

The first episode also featured a contestant some viewers immediately recognized.

Vithun, who had previously appeared on Channel 4’s The Circle, was among the 100 competitors.

After successfully answering a question that only 20% of people were expected to solve, Lee asked the 24-year-old what he would do with the money if he won.

His answer caught the host off guard.

Vithun said he would invest in two things: property and wigs.

The property part was easy enough to understand. His reasoning for the second investment was more unusual — he wanted to be prepared in case his hairline ever began receding.

Lee then asked whether hair loss ran in his family.

Vithun admitted it did not, explaining that he simply liked being prepared.

The exchange quickly became another of the episode’s lighter moments.

Three Contestants Survived to the Final

Eventually, the original group of 100 was reduced to three finalists: Tamzin, Cameron and Paul.

Waiting for them was a £96,000 prize pot.

After surviving the earlier logic challenges, the three locked in their answers to the decisive question.

Then Lee delivered the result.

Tamzin had answered correctly.

The announcement made her the first winner of The 1% Club, earning the enormous £96,000 prize.

Overwhelmed by the result, she broke down in tears as Lee confirmed what she had achieved.

“You have just won £96,000, wow, that is incredible,” he told her.

The Questions Immediately Got Viewers Talking

The programme’s unusual approach to quizzing also sparked debate among viewers during its debut.

Because the questions are intended to test logic rather than specialist knowledge, some people watching from home felt several of the early challenges were surprisingly straightforward.

Others treated that simplicity as part of the fun, attempting to work out whether the supposedly easy questions would become considerably harder as the percentages dropped.

That remains central to the appeal of The 1% Club.

A contestant does not necessarily need years of accumulated trivia knowledge to succeed. Sometimes the challenge is simply recognizing what is directly in front of them before the clock runs out.

And the first episode provided both extremes of the format.

One contestant was so desperate for a different kind of break that he wanted production to hurry up.

Another remained composed long enough to survive the entire competition — and leave the studio £96,000 richer.
