Netflix tear-jerker One Day pays touching tribute to late crew member
Netflix drama One Day concluded the tear-jerking series with a tribute to one of its crew members.
Hitting screens today, the series is based on David Nicholl’s 2009 novel One Day, which was also turned into a movie in 2011.
This version stars Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod, with the show exploring the relationship between student Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley on the same day every year for the subsequent two decades after they first meet.
However, in the credits for the final episode, viewers were greeted with a tribute message.
‘In loving memory of Justin Eely,’ the dedication, which appeared at the end of episode 14, read.
Eely, who was based at Company 3 London, was a senior online editor, sometimes known as a finisher, a largely technical role designed to ensure that a project is transmission-ready.
Prior to One Day, he also worked on other Netflix projects including The Crown and Bodies.
His other credits include Wes Anderson’s latest film Asteroid City and other TV series’ Killing Eve, Strike, The Capture, The Split, Cold Feet and Call the Midwife.
According to Eely’s IMDb, he was involved in the film and TV industry for more than 20 years on over 100 different productions.
A former colleague said he was ‘a great guy to work with’, as reported by Radio Times.
‘He always made life very easy for those around him, managing his time and projects with professionalism and a smile on his face.’
Eely, who was a ‘lifelong resident of London’, was also a keen triathlete and competed in several Ironman races.
It’s not clear exactly when he passed away, but from his social media profiles it appears to have been within the past six months.
He leaves behind a daughter and partner.
After the first-look images for One Day were released, Netflix fans said they were concerned they would struggle ‘to cope emotionally’ when it came time to tune in knowing how the love story was going to play out.
One person commented they didn’t think their ‘heart could take it’ while another said they ‘can’t handle it a second time’.
