radley Walsh in hysterics as The Chase makes Tories butt of the joke
The Conservative Government took centre stage on Friday’s episode of The Chase with a question that didn’t exactly show them in the best light.
The latest edition of the weekday quiz show was underway when the subject moved to politics and contestant Phillip was queried about the number of people who acted in a particular role in the Cabinet during 2022.
Beginning to read the question out loud, host Bradley Walsh couldn’t stop himself from chuckling as he asked: ‘How many Chancellors of the Exchequer were there in 2022?’
Spoiler: If you remember, there were quite a few!
As the audience and contestants joined in with the laughter, Bradley quipped: ‘Oh here goes, it’s a lottery here…’
‘Get your fingers out – add up everyone!’ he added.
The answer options given were three, four or five.
Jenny Ryan, 41, also known as The Vixen, was the formidable Chaser airline pilot Phillip, 47, was up against.
Having locked in his answer, he and Bradley came up with the names of current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Kwasi Kwarteng as two.
Jenny added: ‘There was Zahawi at one point..’
She then admitted: ‘There’s about two years of politics and cabinet that’s just blended into one for me now!’ (Same.)
Phillip’s guess of three was then shown to be incorrect as Bradley explained he was hoping that ‘the Chaser has mixed them all up a bit and not added them up correctly’.
This proved to be true after Jenny went for five.
‘I got to four and then thought I’ll add one for luck,’ she laughed, cracking Bradley and the studio up with her candour.
In the calendar year of 2022, there were indeed four Chancellors of the Exchequer: Mr Sunak was appointed to the role in February 2020 by then-PM Boris Johnson, before he resigned in July 2022.
He was followed in very quick succession by Nadhim Zahawi, who lasted a day over two months until September 6, 2022, when he was replace by new Prime Minister Liz Truss’s choice of Kwasi Kwarteng.
