'Fascinating' British royal period drama is perfect for Wolf Hall and Bridgerton fans
The acclaimed 1994 historical drama is based on the true story and follows King George III’s mental health struggles

The decline in King George III’s health was depicted in a “masterpiece” movie that is now streaming on Channel 4 free of charge. King George III ruled from October 1760 until his death in January 1820, making him the longest reigning king of Great Britain and Ireland.
The 1994 award-winning movie Madness of King George is set in 1788, shortly after the loss of the American colonies. It’s here that King George exhibited peculiar behavior but remained dedicated to his wife, Queen Charlotte, though he soon became unpredictable. He attacks a shrubbery with a stick, thinking he is battling the Americans, and runs around in his nightwear.

A rural physician, Dr. Willis (played by Ian Holm), is summoned through unconventional, severe methods that test both royal etiquette and early mental health treatment.
While his behavior may have appeared entertaining to some, it was, in fact, a concerning sign that King George had lost his sanity. The character presents an unusual depiction of monarchy, madness, and the delicate frameworks of authority, reports the Mirror.
The 1994 film, directed by Nicholas Hytner, is adapted from Alan Bennett’s play The Madness of George III and boasts a distinguished cast. It tells the tragic story of the monarchy’s health deteriorating, throwing the throne into chaos.
Actor Nigel Hawthorne assumes the lead role of the mentally troubled King George, opposite Helen Mirren, who portrays the profoundly faithful Queen Charlotte.
Rupert Everett portrays the ambitious Prince of Wales alongside Julian Rhind-Tutt as the Duke of York. Soap enthusiasts will be thrilled to spot Emmerdale’s Dr. Todd actress, Caroline Harker, appearing in the film as Mrs. Fitzherbert.
The Madness of King George claimed Best Art Direction at the 1995 Academy Awards, alongside numerous British Academy Film Awards, and has amassed a devoted following since its premiere.
The film has secured an impressive 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with one viewer describing it as “An historic movie that is interesting and the king is the whole movie.”
A second person called it a “very fascinating film”, while a third enthused: “Truly extraordinary. I have never seen such an emotional and gripping film as this one.
“This is the best film I’ve seen in a long while. The script and performances are incredible; it’s the funniest and most tragic story. Nigel Hawthorne is astonishing as the king, and Ian Holm is perfect. One of my new favorites of all time”, added another.
