The 1% Club Contestant Cleared After Viewers Accuse Him of Secretly Signalling an Answer to His Wife

A contestant on The 1% Club found himself at the center of an unexpected cheating controversy after eagle-eyed viewers spotted a seemingly suspicious gesture during a question — but an investigation quickly concluded there were no grounds for concern.

Jason Duckett, 36, appeared on the ITV quiz show alongside his wife, Rowena, as part of the 100-person field competing for the chance to win £100,000.

The controversy began after host Lee Mack presented a question whose correct answer involved the words “ear” and “hear.”

Moments later, viewers noticed Jason touching and rubbing his ears.

For some watching at home, the timing looked suspicious.

Viewers Spot the Gesture

The moment quickly attracted attention online, with viewers questioning whether Jason had been attempting to communicate the answer to his wife without saying anything.

“Did anyone else notice this guy giving away the answer when he touched both his ears?” one viewer wrote.

Another suggested there had been “a wee bit of cheating going on,” while someone else described the gesture as “a bit naughty.”

The accusations became significant enough for inquiries to be made into what had happened.

But there was one crucial detail that undermined the theory almost immediately.

Jason and His Wife Were Already Out

By the time Jason made the gesture, both he and Rowena had already been eliminated from the competition.

That meant neither contestant stood to benefit from Jason supposedly signalling the answer.

Jason strongly rejected the accusations and said his movements had nothing to do with helping his wife.

“I almost admire the creativity of someone to come up with that because I hadn’t thought of that,” he said.

“There was nothing to gain for either of us. We were both out.”

Jason explained that any movements he was making were simply a way of calming himself while sitting in the studio.

He also joked about how easily innocent gestures could be interpreted if viewers were determined to find hidden signals.

“If you spin it, you could say my arms are folded. Was the answer harm and arm?”

The Show Quickly Cleared the Couple

The speculation prompted comparisons with one of British television’s most infamous quiz-show scandals — the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? case involving Charles Ingram, in which coughing from the audience was used to signal answers.

However, The 1% Club said its inquiries found nothing suspicious about Jason and Rowena’s behavior.

A spokesperson said: “Any game show worth its salt attracts conspiracy theories. But happily, initial inquiries quickly established that there were no grounds for suspicion.”

Jason and Rowena were therefore cleared of the allegations.

Lee Mack Had Already Singled Out the Couple

During the episode, Lee Mack had spoken to Jason and Rowena after discovering they were husband and wife.

The pair joked about the pronunciation of their surname, Duckett, suggesting it should be pronounced “Doo-kay” — a reference to Hyacinth Bucket insisting her surname was pronounced “Bouquet” in the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

But it was Jason’s later movement that ended up attracting far more attention after the episode aired.

A gesture lasting only seconds was enough to trigger accusations, comparisons with an infamous quiz scandal and eventually an inquiry.

In the end, however, the detail that mattered most was also the simplest: Jason and Rowena had already been eliminated, and The 1% Club found no grounds to suspect they had cheated.
