Will ‘Adults’ Add a New Housemate in Season 3? Bosses Tease Romance & Plot Twist

Adults Season 2 may still be finding viewers as the FX comedy continues to entertain on Hulu, but for fans who already tuned in, the need for more episodes is at an all-time high. While Season 3 hasn’t been greenlit yet, showrunners Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold are already armed with plenty of exciting ideas for what comes next. As fans will recall, Season 2 concluded with Anton (Owen Thiele) and Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) finally admitting their feelings for one another after the latter successfully tanked his HOA presidential campaign. While they celebrated with a kiss fans have pined after since Season 1 concluded, Shaw and Kronengold threw fans for a loop when it was revealed that Anton and Paul Baker weren’t the only housemates hooking up as Billie (Lucy Freyer) and Samir (Malik Elassal) opened a door after they heard Issa (Amita Rao) lurking in the hallway with librarian Margaux (Mia Fowler).
And while the Billie-Samir twist is certainly on the list of top priority plotlines should Adults continue onto Season 3, Shaw and Kronengold acknowledge the possibility that was introduced with Margaux. “We’re really excited for fans to meet Margaux too. We’re really excited about the character of this librarian. Mia Fowler, who played her, did such a funny and specific job in just a few short scenes that got us really excited about the possibilities of this character,” Kronengold says.
“Whether or not Issa’s ready for a relationship or not is [yet] to be seen as well, but we do know that she’s grown a lot this season, so we’d be interested in her trying to pursue something, as well,” he continues, noting, “and honestly, if she feels like the fifth wheel, she’ll probably attach herself to someone else. She’ll find the sixth very quickly.”
Does that mean the friends could be gearing up for another housemate in Season 3? “There’s a lot of bedrooms,” Shaw muses.
“Also, we are aware that six is often the magic number for friend group comedies,” Kronengold chimes in. “We’re always thinking about that kind of thing a lot.”
And expect to potentially hear more of Issa’s particular pronunciation of Margaux, sounding like “Marg-ox” rather than “Mar-go.” As Shaw jokes, “We really like the idea that going forward Issa calls Margaux only ‘Marg-ox,’ and we’re not one-hundred-percent sure whether it’s a bit or not.”
As for potential returning guest stars, beyond Margaux, Shaw says, “Our dream for the show is to have this sort of sandbox where people can come in and create these characters and recur, and the fallacy about the twentysomething friend group comedy sometimes is that there’s only five people in their world when in fact with all of our friends, we have all these recurring characters who pop back up, some of whom we’re obsessed with, some of whom we hate, some of whom we have like weird feuds with, and I think that that feels so true to the experience.”
‘Adults’ Star Amita Rao Breaks Down Issa’s Possum Encounter
One example of that is Season 2’s return of Zack-Carlos (Julian Manjerico), Issa’s ex-husband and Anton’s one-time hookup, who is constantly trying to become the sixth member of their group. “We love the idea of them being haunted by Zack-Carlos, introducing a new character like the bros, and then having so much fun with them that we realized, oh, we’ve got to see more of them,” Shaw shares.
Meanwhile, Kronengold is hopeful for a couple other potential returning guest stars if Season 3 moves forward, as he says, “I think Ben Marshall‘s character, whose name is Colin, is someone I hope we haven’t seen the last of because he’s so funny and we have a lot more ideas for that kind of Brooklyn film bro type.”
Additionally, there’s hope for Zosia Mamet to reprise her role as Nina, who was campaigning on behalf of her father’s HOA president run, in opposition to Paul Baker, but also happens to be a therapist. “Zosia Mamet is such a powerhouse; she made that role so alive and dynamic and different than anything we’ve seen her do, and on set with her, we’re just joking about, is Nina the therapist that Issa needs in her life? And yeah, I mean, we know that her therapist is dead, so she has room, so that would be really, really fun to keep exploring,” Kronengold admits.
