NEED TO KNOW

  • Danielle Fishel reflected on Cory and Topanga’s rushed wedding storyline, saying it didn’t align with earlier episodes
  • Will Friedle criticized Eric’s character, becoming overly silly in later seasons, and questioned Feeny’s marriage storyline
  • Rider Strong pointed out the recasting of Morgan Matthews as a major plot hole in the show’s continuity

Not every storyline on Boy Meets World has aged well, according to some of the show’s stars.

In an interview with Parade, original Boy Meets World cast members Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle reflected on which storylines felt rushed, never came back or didn’t make sense for their characters.

Fishel, who played Topanga on the show, noted that while at the time, she “liked” the idea of Cory Matthews and Topanga “getting married and ending up together,” she feels a bit different now.

The part that Fishel, 45, now disagrees with is that they didn’t need to “do it so young.”

“Especially because we spent quite a few episodes saying that Corey and Topanga decided they were not going to rush into it,” she shared. “Yeah, and then three episodes later, it was like, ‘We gotta plan this wedding!’ ”

The TV series ran for seven seasons, from 1993 to 2000, starring Ben Savage, William Daniels, Betsy Randle, Fishel, Friedle and Strong.

Fishel, Strong and Friedle now all host a rewatch podcast, Pod Meets World, together.

Friedle also had a few gripes, starting with the character development, or lack thereof, for Eric.

“I don’t know if this is necessarily a storyline, just a character thing. I think I would push back on Eric getting so dumb towards the end, like I would have kept him more in season 5-ish Eric,” Friedle shared.

He noted that when Eric met Tommy, an orphan boy, in season 6, it “was a good balance” for his character, compared to “towards the end, where it was just, something was up.”

There was another storyline that Friedle didn’t love, and it was “Feeny getting married, because that never comes back.”

“I disagree with them getting married, because it doesn’t make any sense,” he added, to which Fishel and Strong seemingly agreed.

As for the show’s biggest plot holes, Strong pointed to Morgan Matthews, the younger sister of Cory and Eric Matthews, being recast midway through season 3.

“I would also argue the sister disappearing and then coming back as a completely different human being is probably another [plot hole],” he joked.
