She continued: “He lights up everyone who meets him, which is a credit to me. If only you treated him the same as your other son.” Laying into Dwight, Katie added: “Says a lot about what a s*** dad you are… period.”
Dwight has another teenage son, Orlando, who is 18 years old and has never met Harvey. The former has posted about his son several times on social media, commenting that watching him grow up has been the “greatest gift” of his life.
Harvey has never had a relationship with his father – who even demanded a DNA test during Katie’s pregnancy. Then when he was just a baby, Katie was told the devastating news that Harvey might never walk or talk – something he has gone on to do, defying doctors’ expectations.
But Katie claims Dwight has never accepted his son’s disabilities and has refused to be a part of his life. In her 2016 book Reborn, she wrote: “I’d explained Harvey’s condition to Dwight many times, but he refused to understand it and kept going on about him being fat. It’s sad that he is unable to accept Harvey for who he is and seems unable or unwilling to work within his limitations.”
In the memoir, Katie says that Dwight told her he didn’t want to see her or Harvey again and claims they haven’t been in touch for years.
She penned: “Even after he said that, I was still trying to be persistent. I wanted Harvey to have his dad in his life, but he just wasn’t interested in any of it. He just didn’t give a s**t. There’s only so much you can try before you realise you’re flogging a dead horse. I got up and left and that’s the last time I saw him. I haven’t heard from him since.”
Though she’s said “the door is always open” to Dwight if he does want to have a relationship with his son, so far he hasn’t taken Katie up on the offer.
She shared: “I would love the day I see Dwight and Harvey in front of each other. My mum still contacts his manager every year, and asks, does he want to see Harvey for his birthday, and it’s always the same – no.”
In her documentary Harvey and Me, Katie talked of Harvey’s incredible progress and said: “Six years ago, he didn’t really talk – and now he talks all the time. Ten years ago he was in a wheelchair. He wouldn’t even walk, didn’t even talk, didn’t draw how he draws, and now look at him!” Dwight Yorke’s representatives declined to comment when approached by The Mirror.
